Mortal Kombat 9 Review

It took around ten years but it is finally here, a Mortal Kombat game worth playing. NetherRealm Studios (formally known as Midway Games) has rebooted the Mortal Kombat franchise to what I think could possibly be one of the best Mortal Kombat games ever. NetherRealm Studios has taken parts of their past games and put them all together for a very unique experience. This game is jammed pack with old and new gametypes.

You have your arcade style ladder which has around ten different opponents. Once you have defeated the ladder with whichever character you have chosen you will get a brief back story of that character. From there you have the story mode which could last you a good couple of hours. You play as every character from Earth Realm in defending Outworld and Nether Realm from invading Earth Realm. Story mode begins with what happens after Mortal Kombat Armageddon. With the whole cast dead. Raiden and Shao Khan are locked in a fight to the death. Right before he dies Raiden sends his past self a message warning him about the future. From there the game returns to the period of the first three games (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, and Mortal Kombat III). You replay the first three games with the events being slightly altered.

There are over 300 unlockables in the krypt which unlock everything from art from the game, secret fatalities, alternate character costumes and a lot more that I have not yet been able to unlock. I’m sure in the future we will find out more of what else we can unlock. Challenge mode offers players to try all different kinds of challenges everything from old school test your sight, might, and luck, to trying different kinds of training modes to help your overall gameplay. They start off easy but just get extremely hard as you go up the challenge ladder.

On the bottom of the screen there is now a super meter which allows you to with the meter one third charged enhance a special attack, with the meter half full allows you to interrupt a combo which is called a breaker, and with the meter full you can perform a super combo called an X-ray move. During the X-ray move the camera will zoom in and will show the inside of the character that is being attacked while bones and organs are being broken and ruptured. You can charge up the meter by blocking and attacking your opponent. A new feature in Mortal Kombat is the tag team mode. This feature is just allows you to tag your partner in and out whenever you feel like and also allows you to have perform tag team combos just like in Marvel vs. Capcom.

Now those are just the single player modes. This new Mortal Kombat offers something that had never been offered before. This Mortal Kombat has online support and allows you to play either on XBL (Xbox Live) and PSN (Playstation Network). You are able to create rooms, see leader broads, use full text support, be able to view games in progress, and be able to cheer, boo, and rate a player with an avatar. On XBL you use your own avatar and on PSN you can choose an avatar that is preset dressed in Mortal Kombat costumes. As of now the only two game modes available online are 1v1 and King of the Hill. King of the Hill has room up to 8 players and allows two players to fight while the rest watch and wait their turn. The winner becomes the King of the Hill and the loser goes to the end of the line. Right now the multiplayer is a bit buggy and most games are pretty laggy but you do find a match here and there with a good connection. Overall this is a great game and I would recommend it for any old school Mortal Kombat fan.
